Živimo v časih, ki vzbujajo zaskrbljenost. Po drugi svetovni vojni in holokavstu ter v času zločinov komunističnih oblasti v Vzhodni Evropi so članice Sveta Evrope ustvarile novo svobodno in demokratično Evropo. Sprejele so Evropsko konvencijo o človekovih pravicah, ustanovile so Evropsko sodišče za človekove pravice, eno najuglednejših sodišč v svetovnem merilu. Na pogorišču Evrope je nastal pravni red, ki je bil utemeljen na svobodnih medijih, svobodnih volitvah, prepovedi diskriminacije, vladavini prava in neodvisnemu sodstvu. Tako kot takrat lahko tudi danes izhod iz globalne krize, v kateri smo, temelji samo na spoštovanju teh vrednot. In nikakor ne na maksimi »nujnost ne pozna zakona«. K temu lahko in moramo prispevati vsi. Največja odgovornost leži na organih oblasti, ki imajo največ vzvodov za varstvo demokratične ureditve, svoj prispevek k boljši družbi pa mora dati tudi vsak posameznik. S tem, da se upre prefinjenemu in dobro organiziranemu pranju možganov po družbenih omrežjih, da razmišlja s svojo glavo in se javno oglasi, ko zazna nepravilnosti v družbi.

We live in concerning times. After World War II and the Holocaust, and during the crimes committed by communist authorities in Eastern Europe, the members of the Council of Europe established a new, free, and democratic Europe. They adopted the European Convention on Human Rights and established the European Court of Human Rights, one of the most world’s prestigious courts. Out of the ashes of Europe, a legal order emerged, founded on free media, free elections, the prohibition of discrimination, the rule of law, and an independent judiciary. Today, as then, the resolution of the global crisis we face can only be founded on respect for these values, not on the principle that “necessity knows no law”. We can and must all contribute to this effort. The greatest responsibility rests with the authorities, who possess the most leverage to protect the democratic order. However, every individual must also contribute to a better society by resisting the sophisticated and well-organised brainwashing on social media, thinking independently, and speaking out publicly when they detect irregularities in society.
