SUMMARY
The author presents the development of the number and size of municipalities in the former Yugoslavia in the period from the end of the 19th century, until today. The author presents the historical framework in which Yugoslavia was formed and explains the reasons for the drastic reduction in the number of municipalities in the 1950s. He notes that the development after the disintegration of the SFRY was different. Some countries have severely fragmented the territorial structure, others have kept it almost unchanged, and still others took an intermediate path. The reasons for such a development are different. There are several questions for further research, e.g. whether territorial changes after the disintegration of the SFRY can be linked to the “rise” of pre-war local self-government systems or not, and the question of the impact of moni- toring the European Charter of Local Self-Government on the number and size of municipalities in the region.
