POVZETEK
Avtor razpravlja o pomenu jezika za narodno samobitnost. Posebej obravnava položaj slovenskega jezika v času francoske uprave Ilirskih provinc. Takrat je slovenščina prvič postala redni učni jezik v osnovnih šolah in nižjih gimnazijah. Ni pa postala uradni jezik sodnih postopkov in javne uprave. Zlasti med izobraženci pa je ostala podoba francoskega obdobja kljub temu pozitivna.
SUMMARY
The author deals with the significance of a language to its national identity. In particular, he examines the position of the Slovenian language during the French administration of the Illyrian Provinces. That time marked the first time that Slovenian became an independent teaching language in the elementary schools and lower gymnasia. On the other hand, it did not become the language of the court-procedures or of public administration. Despite that, the image of the French period has remained positive, especially among Slovenian intellectuals.
