Avgusta 2018 je mednarodno skupnost pretresla novica, da je po kratki bole- zni preminil Kofi Atta Annan, sedmi generalni sekretar Združenih narodov, človek presežkov, ki je v devetdesetih letih 20. stoletja v organizacijo vnesel prepotrebne reforme in jo rešil skorajšnjega bankrota, za kar je leta 2001, sku- paj z Združenimi narodi, prejel tudi Nobelovo nagrado za mir. Članek se poleg pregleda vzpona njegove kariere v civilni službi Združenih narodov, osredo- toča na zapuščino Annana, ki je znal spretno izrabiti svoj položaj za doseganje postavljenih ciljev. Med drugim je zaslužen za presunljivo uresničitev ciljev tisočletja, krepitev mirovnih operacij Združenih narodov in pionirstvo pri opozarjanju na posledice podnebnih sprememb. V okviru fundacije Kofi An- nan, organizacije The Elders in ad hoc komisij si je prizadeval za zagotovitev svetovnega miru tudi po upokojitvi iz Združenih narodov.

In August 2018, the international community was deeply shocked to learn that Kofi Atta Annan, the seventh United Nations Secretary General and a man of many surpluses, passed away after a short illness. In the 1990s, Annan intro- duced the necessary reforms for the organization and saved it from the ban- kruptcy, the success for which Annan and the organization were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. In addition to reviewing the rise of his career within the UN Civil Service, the article focuses on Annan’s legacy, built on skilfull usage of his position to achieve the set goals. Among many achievements, he is credited with the impressive implementation of the Millennium Goals, the strengthening of UN peacekeeping operations and pioneering his efforts to draw attention to the consequences of climate change. Within the Kofi Annan Foundation, The Elders, and the ad hoc commissions, he strove for world pea- ce even after his retirement from the United Nations.
